She : International Women’s Day

We were deeply troubled by various unconventional customs affecting women worldwide. In response, we endeavored to address these discriminatory practices through verbal branding, aiming to initiate a campaign that would raise awareness about these rituals and enlighten people about their implications. Our objective was to inform the broader community and inspire them to take a stand and vocally oppose such practices!

Task

⬤ 01. Overview

SHE

We became aware of unconventional rituals and discriminatory practices against women worldwide. Delving deeper into the subject, we researched these issues and were deeply disturbed by the distressing statistics and harmful practices women endure. Consequently, we resolved to launch a campaign on International Women’s Day to educate and raise awareness among the general public about these harmful practices and their detrimental impact on society.

Our concept was to incorporate the word “SHE” into every phrase we used, symbolizing the importance of women as individuals while highlighting the many ways they continue to face oppression.

⬤ 02. Chapters

The ⬤ Signs

We carefully created a set of posters designed to illustrate and elucidate the concept of “Red Signs.”

Women serve as shelters and pillars of support for their children, brothers, and families. Yet, it’s a poignant paradox that these very women, who provide some of the most crucial support in the world, often find themselves in need of protection and refuge. Women confront various forms of harassment, highlighting the stark reality that those who are typically seen as sources of strength and security can themselves become vulnerable and require shelter and support.

The practice of the bridal virginity test using bedsheets is not a recent development. Despite the passage of centuries, our society continues to judge women’s character and honor based on the state of their hymen. The tradition dictates that if the bedsheet turns red on the wedding night after intercourse, the woman is seen as pure and culturally virtuous. However, if it doesn’t, the bride may face accusations of engaging in pre-marital sexual activity.

The idea of a bedsheet virginity test is propagated to control the sexual agency of women.

Menstruation is still regarded as a taboo subject in numerous regions around the world, particularly in rural and underdeveloped areas of Nepal and India. Even though it is against the law, there are dedicated huts where menstruating individuals are secluded and essentially banished due to their bleeding. Despite efforts by the government to intervene, the centuries-old tradition of “chhaupadi” has proven challenging to eradicate due to deeply ingrained fears and cultural taboos.

Women are often regarded as nurturers, and Mother Earth herself provides sustenance for all living beings. However, it is disheartening to observe that women remain undernourished in various parts of the world. According to UNICEF, “Global crises persistently and unfairly affect women’s ability to access nutritious food. In 2021, the number of food-insecure women exceeded men by 126 million, a stark increase from the 49 million difference in 2019, effectively more than doubling the gender gap in food insecurity.”
